Norway and the Slovak Republic established diplomatic relations on 1 January 1993. Before the establishment of a Norwegian Embassy in Bratislava in June 2004, the Embassy in Prague, and later the Embassy in Vienna were responsible for relations with the Slovak Republic.
The bilateral relations between Norway and Slovakia are very good, and there have been a number of political level visits during the last years. Norway has actively supported Slovakia in preparations for membership in both NATO and the EU. Through the Norwegian Action Plan for the countries seeking membership in the EU, Norway contributed to a number of bilateral projects. Through the EEA Financial Mechanisms, Norway will contribute substantially over the next five years towards different projects in sectors to be defined by Slovak authorities as priority sectors.
Business relations have so far been on a modest level. Exceptions are Telenor and Norsk Hydro which have extensive investments in Slovakia. Additionally, cultural relations have so far been on a relatively modest scale.
